André and I finally got sucked into watching Dexter. Yeah, so we were late, but we got there eventually. It is amazing to watch a show about such a dark character and get sucked into his world enough to root for him to not get caught being a serial killer. I know, sometimes the writing sucked, but Michael C. Hall is stellar. We both loved him in that role. I started a song when we were about 5 seasons in. I didn't know what I was writing about but the words were flying onto the paper. I realized it was about him, and that I was writing it from the viewpoint of one of the women in his life, either his sister or love interest (which sometimes intersected anyway--mini spoiler for those that haven't watched it). I have a tendency to write catchy upbeat songs about dark subjects, and here is another shining example of that twisted skill. In the studio we made sure to add a bunch of spooky synth to bring in the darkness, but on the whole it is a celebration of his character, with all of his troubled parts.
lyrics
Golden Boy (Words and music by Noëlle Hampton)
In the morning light all those little things you did
They’re coming into focus, coming into focus in your head
And the sun across your face makes you look like a golden boy
But I didn’t see it coming, didn’t see it coming again
Lion heart, and the raging sea
Red like blood, that you hide from me
Oh, oh oh oh, you were right
You’ve got a wild side, you’ve got a wild side
Oh oh oh oh, it can’t be denied
You’re like the flood tide
You’ve got a wild side
Don’t you feel all the weight of the world on you
When you’re holding what you’re holding
Holding what you’re holding inside
It’s a crazy thing what real love can do
And you didn’t see it coming,
didn’t see it coming down the line
Burning coal beneath the ash
I see you now, we can’t go back
Oh, oh oh oh, you were right
You’ve got a wild side, you’ve got a wild side
Oh oh oh oh, it can’t be denied
You’re like the flood tide
You’ve got a wild side
Do all those things at night turn off your tragic light?
Do all those things at night turn off your tragic light?
The perfect mask of a common man
With a wounded heart and a master plan
Oh, oh oh oh, you were right
You’ve got a wild side, you’ve got a wild side
Oh oh oh oh, it can’t be denied
You’re like the flood tide
You’ve got a wild side
You’re like the flood tide
