about

Based on the news story of "THE MISSING GROOM" This was the first song I wrote after we formed The Belle Sounds. I definitely hear how my writing changed in order to make space for the vocal parts to shine. I was SO thrilled to have 2 people singing with me after years of no harmonies. After watching a story on Nancy Grace about an affluent young couple who went on their honeymoon on a cruise in Europe, and somewhere off the coast of Mykonos, the groom disappeared, I was sucked in. I went online and searched for the manuscript of the show and then took notes about the details of the story that stood out to me. All I had to do then was fit a complicated murder mystery into a song with three verses, a bridge and chorus. The questioned remained about what perspective this story was going to come from. I found myself saying "I" in the lyrics, as if I was on the ship with them, and maybe I was the only one who really knew what happened to him. That seemed more intriguing than just reporting. I could hear the spooky harmonies as I wrote, and it pushed me forward. I couldn't wait to actually have the voices join me. This song is a journey, so if you only like 3 minute songs, turn away now.

lyrics

Ghost of Mykonos (Words and music by Noëlle Hampton)

Honeymoon out on the Brilliance of The Seas
French Riviera down to southern Italy
Eastward bound to the Grecian Coast
They bring you champagne for the toast

Like a shadow on the wall I was to you
Fascinated by the story of the two
Have you seen so much joy?
I have seen so much joy

Oh, I won’t tell them anything
Oh, I won’t tell them anything
Even though the truth will set you free
Now you’re just the ghost of Mykonos
Drowning in a cobalt sea

You bragged of diamonds and of dowry that abound
Befriending strangers and you buy another round
Oh and how the absinthe flowed
That makes a mad man, don’t you know?

Oh, I won’t tell them anything
Oh, I won’t tell them anything
Even though the truth will set you free
Now you’re just the ghost of Mykonos
Drowning in a cobalt sea

And every night you’re in my dreams
The wind and stars hear your pleas

Next day the bride wakes down the hallway on the floor
No recollection of events the night before
I heard it all through the walls of my room
Now she is the wife of the missing groom

Oooh Oooh Ohh Ooooohhh

Oh, I won’t tell them anything
Oh, I won’t tell them anything
Even though the truth will set you free
Now you’re just the ghost of Mykonos
Drowning in a cobalt sea
