about

We weren't sure if we were going to release singles out of these tunes or try to do an EP. Right before we headed to Nashville, I wrote this song. I sat down at the piano and had the entire thing done in a few minutes. I have quite a few songs about friendship. I find it an interesting subject, because so many of our relationships are reflections on who and what we are at that moment. We always have a choice of who to include in our lives. This song is based on a longtime friendship that seems to be taking a break right now. Not gone, just paused. Sometimes we need that space for something else, but it doesn't mean the love goes away.
I wrote this with the harmonies in mind. If you listen closely to the track you will hear the sound of clinking bottles. Evan tuned them to the song with just the right amount of water and played them beautifully. (I wanted it to sound like masts clinking at the dock.) Neilson made this track shine. That moment and sound of the drums when they finally come in is one of my favorites on this EP. Since this track became the fifth song we went to record, we decided to put together an EP. I am so grateful that it worked out that way, because these songs fit beautifully together, with themes of nature and character woven in.

lyrics

Drifter (Words and music by Noëlle Hampton)

Friend, you're a drifter to the end
And I still remember when
I could see you from the shore

And friend, if you make it back to land
Come and find me if you can
My heart will always live inside of yours

Oooh ooh ooh…

Once, we were young and wild and free
And you tied yourself to me
Like a safety boat, I knew I'd need you

Once, you would tell me everything
And we'd run and swim and sing
And if I ached, you would ache too

Oooh ooh ooh…

Oh friend, there's an ocean in the way
And some things I'd like to say
It doesn't help us to ignore

And friend, you're a drifter to the end
And I still remember when
I could see you from the shore
